M|P provided architectural design and engineering design for the NDT Lab at Huntington Ingalls. The Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Laboratory building project consisted of adding a chain wall elevated 4,200 SF two story lean-to addition onto the east side of the existing elevated Component Packaging Area (CPA) high bay structure. The building’s infrastructure consisted primarily of red iron, CMU, PEMB girts/purlins, R-Panel roofing and siding with interior metal stud and gyp board partitions. Building layout design considerations were incorporated in order to maintain direct pedestrian connection back to the existing CPA production floor and its associated 2 story office appendage via elevated concrete platforms and steel catwalks. The 1st floor programming included a large testing laboratory, film processing/cleaning/viewing rooms, office space, and an associated lab equipment storage room, while the second floor consisted of administrative some private offices, an open office area, and a conference room.
